It can feel very scary when domestic violence happens in your family. You may be afraid to tell anyone in case you make things worse. You may worry that it will end up with the adults getting divorced. If this did happen it would be not your fault; you have the right to live your life without this sort of fear. It is OK to ask about the violence and discuss it with someone that you trust

Because you think it’s only happening to you


Domestic violence is very often kept secret in families. In reality it is far more common than you may think but people still don’t talk about it much to each other. In the UK, 1 woman in every 4 will experience domestic violence. That means if your mum goes out to a party with 12 friends, at least three of them may have a violent partner. You may feel alone, but there are thousands of children in a similar situation as you.

It is natural to feel sad, disappointed and let down by the person who makes you feel unsafe.

Grown ups sometimes behave in ways that are confusing. You are right to think that violence is not normal, even if it seems to be in your own family; you are not crazy even if it may feel like that sometimes

Because you think they’ve done something wrong and because you may also love the person who is being violent


Domestic violence is never your fault, it is always the responsibility of the person who behaves in this way.

If someone is making your home feel unsafe it is understandable to feel angry about this; sometimes being angry helps you to decide what you might do to the change the situation for the better. IF YOU DECIDE TO DO SOMETHING YOU SHOULD FIRST TALK TO A GROWN UP WHO YOU TRUST ABOUT THIS.
